Alexa St. John is a Detroit-based reporter covering climate solutions at The Associated Press. There, she largely focuses on electrification as one way of mitigating the impact of transportation on the environment. Some of her recent work can be found here.

Alexa previously covered EVs on the transportation desk at Business Insider, focusing on auto retail, charging infrastructure, the global battery supply chain, and venture capital. She centered her coverage around startup production ramp-ups and challenges, and broke news on company layoffs, executive turnover, and more.

Alexa also previously reported on automotive suppliers, tech, and mobility at Automotive News. There, she was responsible for much of the publication’s early reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the supply chain and regularly reported on supplier earnings, advancements in vehicle tech, and major mobility trends. At Automotive News, Alexa was a lead contributor to the "Ingenuity Unleashed" anniversary project on the Great Recession's impact on the auto retail industry, which was a 1st Runner Up in the 2019 Neal Awards.

Alexa spent the summer of 2019 at the Wall Street Journal, where she covered metro New York transit and breaking news. She has also spent a summer reporting at Local 4/WDIV in Detroit, Mich., where she gained skills in broadcast journalism and web producing.

Alexa graduated from the University of Michigan in May 2019 with degrees in Communication Studies and the Program in the Environment. At Michigan, Alexa was Editor-in-Chief of The Michigan Daily, the then-128-year-old, independent student publication on campus, where she led 200+ staffers with special projects, investigations and multimedia initiatives. Prior to becoming Editor-in-Chief, Alexa was Managing News Editor and a beat reporter on the news staff.
